New shuttle service for hikers to open in Renton

The Trailhead Direct shuttle service in King County will be starting soon and have new stops and routes so that of the Seattle area’s urban regions can be served.

Trailhead Direct is a project led by King County Parks and King County Mero to reduce safety hazards, ease vehicle congestion, and expand access to hiking destinations along I-90.

The shuttle service began two years ago and has been popular among hikers moving from Bellevue and the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Hikers can be connected through the shuttle service to the challenging Mailbox Peak, the popular Mount Si, and many other trails in the Issaquah Alps and beyond.

This year, a route will be added that calls in at the Renton Highlands, the downtown Renton Transit Center, and at the light rail station at Tukwila International Boulevard. It will also have an Issaquah stop so that hikers can connect to the Mailbox Peak and Mount Si shuttle routes. In addition, hikers will be able to travel to Cougar Mountain. Flyer printing can be used to provide more details about costs for such routes.

Sponsors of the shuttle service include REI Co-op; the cities of Renton, North Bend, Issaquah, Bellevue, Seattle, and Tukwila; the Washington State Department of Natural Resources; and Issaquah Alps Trails Club. Shuttle service will begin this Saturday, April 20.
