Athletic boot camp puts Lacey through paces

An upcoming six-week course will introduce athletes to the rough and tumble world of roller derby. South Sound Roller Derby leads the class.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by teams on an oval track. A game lasts 60 minutes and comprises a series of “jams,” each lasting two minutes. During the jam, five team members are on the track, a “jammer” and four “blockers.” The jammer tries to lap members of the opposing team, while their blockers protect them. The blockers also try to hinder the jammer on the other team.

The sport requires participants to be skilled roller skaters, but the upcoming course is open for people of all skill levels. The course will help participants build confidence and strength while learning roller derby fundamentals. Events like this benefit from advertisements created by organizers using poster printing.

People need to bring protective gear including elbow and knee pads, wrist guards, a mouth guard, helmet, and skates. A limited amount of gear is available to borrow, but people should be prepared to purchase what they need.

The first class is Saturday January 3 and the course ends Sunday February 8. The hours are Saturdays from 10.00 am until 12.00 pm, and Sundays from 4.00 pm until 5.30 pm at the Faith Community Center, 7075 Pacific Avenue SE in Lacey. The fee is $99 and the course is limited to those 18 and over.
