Work under way on I-90

Work recently started on I-90 in Issaquah, and drivers should be prepared for some delays.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the agency plans to add auxiliary lanes to I-90 in both directions, in the section between West Lake Sammamish Parkway and Eastgate, in Bellevue.

The first phase of the work involves re-striping I-90 in both directions, which will move the lanes out from the median in the center. The shift in the lanes will give crews room to work reinforcing culverts, and repairing other infrastructure before auxiliary lanes are added.

Auxiliary lanes are extra lanes that are added to the freeway between interchanges that are close together. The lanes give motorists more time to leave or enter the freeway safely, depending on whether it's necessary for them to slow down, speed up, or merge. The new auxiliary lanes that are being created will be outside the lanes that currently exist on the I-90, which will enable the freeway to carry more traffic, according to WSDOT officials.

Once crews have finished their work on the median, the process will be repeated and lanes near the shoulders will be shifted to give crews room to work on that side. Motorists should expect ramps, lanes, and shoulders to be closed intermittently. Lanes may be narrower than usual. Poster printing can be used to create warning Signs in cases like this.

WSDOT says the work should be finished late in 2021.
