Film takes an alternative look at education

For those Issaquah parents and concerned citizens who are interested in education reform, the Issaquah School District will have a movie screening of a documentary on the subject.

The documentary, titled ‘Most Likely to Succeed’, caused some excitement at the recent Sundance Film Festival, and received high praise from Education Week.

The film was created after director Greg Whitely asked why our education system has not moved in tandem with our economy as a result of technological innovation. After a short lesson about U.S. education’s forefather Horace Mann, the committee of 10, and the effects of the Industrial Revolution, his film goes on to examine alternative Forms of education, focusing mainly on a San Diego school (High Tech High) that has completely revamped its thinking on the whole education process.

The film further shows the viewers how changes could be made to help students succeed in the future. Some education reform advocates may want to get Flyers printed and distributed to get the word out. The new Gibson Ek High School will follow a similar vision as it has been designed with emphasis on real-world internships and project-based learning through a personalized and student-centered curriculum.

The movie will be shown November 4, at 6:30 pm, at the Issaquah High School Performing Arts Center, 700 2nd Ave SE, Issaquah. A question and answer session will follow.
