Elementary school students demonstrate reading capabilities in competition

The Redmond Public Library recently hosted the Global Reading Challenge for the Lake Washington School District.

The ‘Rapid Readers’, a team of students from the fourth and fifth grades at Margaret Mead Elementary School in Sammamish, just a short distance from Issaquah, were victorious against the Keller Elementary School ‘Golden Unicorns’ who are the Western Region champions.

The Challenge is sponsored by the King County Library System. It selects six Books that teams of fourth and fifth grade students are to read. During the Challenge, the students are given questions to answer about the Books.

There is a challenge within each school to narrow down the students to one team. Then the team is involved in one of two regional challenges in the district. A district-level challenge follows, in which the two winning teams from the region compete.

As the Rapid Readers are the winners in the regional competition, they will move on to another competition in the region against students from other school districts.

Among the Books on the reading lists were ‘Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library’ by Chris Grabenstein, ‘Snow Treasure’ by Marie McSwigan, and ‘The One and Only Ivan’ by Katherine Applegate

The next competition is on March 22 at 4:30 pm at the Bothell Library. Banner printing would be a good way for those who come to the competition to show their support for their fellow students.
