Winter musical announced in Aberdeen

A popular show is scheduled to be performed in Aberdeen next month.

For the first time, the Bishop Center for the Performing Arts is presenting the ever-popular musical “Hello, Dolly!” The show opened in Detroit at the Fisher Theater in 1963, and transferred to Broadway the following year. It won 10 Tony Awards, a record it held for 37 years, and ran for 2,844 performances.

The show centers on widow Dolly Gallagher Levi. In her role as a matchmaker, she goes to Yonkers to find a wife for the wealthy Horace Vandergelder, although she hopes to marry him herself. Side plots include Dolly convincing Vandergelder’s niece, the niece’s boyfriend, and the two clerks who work for him to come to New York City, where the fun continues. The show is a light-hearted celebration of life and love, and is suitable for audiences of all ages.

The Bishop Center for the Performing Arts is located on the campus of Grays Harbor College. The center hosts shows including the college’s Jazz Band, staged readings by drama students, opera workshops, and classic films.

“Hello, Dolly!” opens Friday, March 6 at 7.30 pm. Additional performances are on March 7, 13, and 14 at 7.30 pm. There are two matinees as well, on March 8 and 15 at 2.00 pm. Tickets are $25 for adults, seniors and students pay $15, children 12 and younger are $10, and GHC students may attend free of charge.
