Special race coming up in Colchester

An upcoming race allows runners to honor fallen heroes, promote fitness, and enjoy their community at the same time.

The Vermont Remembers running event features a 5K, and 11K walk/run, and an option for an 11K Ruck. The race offers both in-person and virtual options, and all proceeds will go to support the Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund. The memorial is located at the Vermont National Guard’s Camp Johnson, and honors the eleven National Guardsmen from Vermont who were lost in Iraq.

Those who want to run the virtual race do so by choosing their course and starting on the same day as the in-person runners. Organizers will send an email or text message on race day with instructions on how runners can submit their results. Runners can then proceed on their own.

“Rucking” is the practice of adding weight, usually in a backpack, to carry during a race. The practice evolved from military training.

Open ceremonies, a packet pick-up, and a chance for early registrants to obtain a commemorative t-shirt are part of the event. Runners may pick up their packets starting at 8.00 am, with opening ceremonies scheduled for 8.40 am. The races will begin at 9.11 am.

The event is scheduled for September 8, and the entry fee is $30. When outdoor events like this are organized, planners have the option of using banner printing to create signage such as course markers.
