Family fun scheduled in Colchester

A novel event that promises to be fun for everyone is coming to Colchester.

For the 15th year, Colchester is holding its Annual Touch-a-Truck event. A variety of official vehicles will be on display, including fire trucks, dump trucks, police cars, and tractors. Children (and their parents and other big kids) will be able to climb on the vehicles, sit in the drivers’ seats, and learn how the vehicles are operated and what they are used for. Drivers and operators of the vehicles are often on hand to explain their jobs.

Touch-a-truck events are held throughout the country, and usually have live music, food, and other types of entertainment. They are also often used as fundraisers.

In Colchester, organizers are aware some children have sensory issues and can become overstimulated, so there are two timeslots available. From 9.00 am until 10.30 am, it is “Quiet Time” at the event, and no sirens will be used. From 10.30 am until 11.00 am, no noise abatement will be used, and air horns and sirens may be sounded.

Touch-a-Truck is set for Saturday, May 4, at the parking lot at Colchester High School. There is still room for any business that would like to participate. When events like this are planned, organizers can contact printing companies who work with flyer printing to create handouts that explain the individual vehicles and their functions.
