Colchester welcomes new year with classic symphony

The performance of one of the most famous symphonies ever written will bring in the new year in Colchester.

The Green Mountain Mahler Festival will once again celebrate New Year’s Day by playing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. On the podium to conduct both the orchestra and chorus will be Daniel Bruce, with Erik Kroncke, Adam Hall, Nessa Rabin, and Annalise Shelmandie as the soloists. The fourth movement of the symphony is the choral section. Widely known as the “Ode to Joy,” it demands outstanding artists.

The singers all have operatic experience: Bass Kroncke has sung such roles as Mephistopheles in “Faust,” in houses from Florida to New Jersey. Tenor Adam Hall had contracts with the New York City Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, and has appeared as the Duke in “Rigoletto” and other leading roles. Mezzo-soprano Nessa Rabin has sung such roles as the Fairy Queen in “Iolanthe,” and is in demand on the concert stage. Finally, soprano Annalise Shelmandine recently appeared at the Umatilla Theater in scenes from five operas.

Established in 2002, the Green Mountain Mahler Festival provides local musicians with the opportunity to experience the music of Gustav Mahler and other important Romantic composers and perform their music for the public.

The concert is January 1, from 3.00 pm until 4.30 pm, at the Elley-Long Music Center, at 223 Ethan Allen Avenue in Colchester. Organizers of events like this often use poster printing to create advertising for them.
