What's in a name?
Colchester's charter dates back to June 7, 1763, making it one of the oldest towns in Vermont. In 1953, the Vermont Historical Quarterly theorized that the community was named after a gentleman called William de Nassau Zulestein. Zulestein was King George III's secretary of state, and lived in Colchester, England.

It was also instrumental in the preservation of an 1815 one-room schoolhouse, which is now open as the One Room Log Schoolhouse Museum.

Colchester is bordered on the north by the Winooski River, which was dammed by Ira Allen in 1786.
