Cherry Blossom Festival to be celebrated in Alexandria

In Spring, Alexandria residents turn outdoors to enjoy the Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival commemorates Japan’s ties to the United States as indicated by its 1912 gift of Cherry Blossom trees that bloom during this time of year in D.C.

As of March 18, a water taxi will take visitors from Old Town to D.C.’s Wharf Development, on a 10-minute walk to the Tidal Basin, on Wednesday through Mondays. A boat cruise down the Potomac past the cherry blossoms can be booked on the weekends starting March 19.

Biking is another option, as Pedal from Unlimited Biking will provide a bike rental package including accessories, Bags, helmets, maps for guests either wanting to explore the festival on their own or take the two-to-three-hour “Washington DC: Blossoms by Guided Bike Tour,” which begins at 10:30 am on weekends until the blossoms subside.

Old Town’s Torpedo Factory Arts Center will hold a Cherry Blossom Exhibition from April 2 to May 1. All three floors will offer floral art displays and live art demonstrations. A special Cherry Blossom Jubilee is planned for April 10 from noon to 3:00 pm. The event will have cherry-blossom-themed activities and Nen Daiko, a taiko drum group, performing on the waterfront.

Cherry Blossom cocktails, coffees, ciders, gelato, sangria, and Tokyo-inspired Menus will be offered by local restaurants, breweries and eateries. Blossoms are often used by Stationery printers as subjects for their notecards.

The Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 20 to April 17.
