Zombies invaded Cottonwood Heights this month, but they didn't come lurching on foot; they rode in on bicycles.
The June 5 event was organized by the city's economic development department as a way to kick off the summer, and to encourage families to enjoy the outdoors as they played together. As part of the fun, everyone was encouraged to wear their best (or their worst) zombie costumes and make-up, and come to the city hall with their bicycles.
The evening started at 6 pm on the plaza, with food trucks, a bicycle rodeo, vendor booths, and the School of Rock band providing live music. An hour later, the zombies got on their bikes and rode through the city's neighborhoods.
The route led from city hall to Banbury Road, then to Winesap Road, to Macintosh Lane, then to Racquet Club Drive, which led back to Winesap Road. From there, riders followed their outbound route back to the start.
The city's business development coordinator, Peri Kinder, called the evening a family event that had been designed to focus on bicycle safety and opportunities for outdoor recreation. The zombie costumes were an added bonus.
Events like this can benefit if organizers work with a banner printing company to create Banners to display along the route. Not only do they show riders the course, they add to the color and fun of the proceedings.
