Workshop to see Houston gardeners go native

When considering which plants to add to a garden, natives species offer many benefits, and a Houston horticultural workshop will explore this in depth.

Both newbie and experienced green thumbs can benefit from the Nine Natives Program, which is a production of the Houston Botanic Garden. It will include a sip and stroll visit to the site’s beds, and Beth Carter will share her knowledge of gardening.

During the session, the participants will be able to discover how native species attract birds, butterflies, and other wildlife and offer them food and shelter. Some may even be edible to humans, and all will be well suited to local going conditions, while also being resistant to pests and diseases. A presentation will follow the walk, providing further tips and information to those in attendance. Tickets for the function are $50.

By introducing the public to the benefits of choosing native plants, a gardening workshop can play a role in local environmental stewardship. Learning materials for continuing education sessions will be on offer at local Print shops, which will have many options available for its clientele to choose from.

The introduction to the native species available in the current nursery trade, as well as their use and benefits, will begin at 5:00 pm on April 19. It will take place at the Houston Botanic Garden.
