Houston outing to welcome birders of all skill levels

Many northern birds spend their winters enjoying Houston's mild climate, making November a great opportunity to see a large variety of species. An opportunity to do this is coming up.

Local amateur ornithologists will be taking to the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center for an organized bird survey, and it will be an activity both newbie birdwatchers and those with experience can enjoy. It will be an early morning outing, and will be led by a member of the Arboretum’s staff.

The activity will include a two-hour walk around the arboretum grounds, watching and listening for birds along the way. With some luck, they may even be able to spot a “lifer” and children are welcome, so long as they are quiet. There will be binoculars available should anyone need them, but they are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. It has been requested that dogs be left at home.

Birding offers a way to get involved with environmental stewardship, and it can also offer fun in the fresh air. Groups that host a bird walk or similar outing will be able to source simple field guides from local Print shops.

The Houston Arboretum’s November bird survey has been scheduled for November 12. It will begin at 8:00 am, and the registrants will meet up at 4501 Woodway Drive before they head out.
