At its recent annual meeting, Uptown Dallas Inc., a non-profit with the mission of improving the Uptown district, explained its plan for the conversion of Cole Avenue and McKinney Avenue back to two-way streets.
A crowd of approximately 80 spectators, made up of business owners and residents, showed up to the Canopy by Hilton to hear what Uptown Dallas had on its agenda for the rest of 2022, where they heard of the two-way street system proposal. This would be a return to a model used 50 years ago.
Among the expenses that will be incurred are the replacement of traffic signals, Signs, the inclusion or improvements of sidewalks, lighting, ramps, and crosswalks. Other costs will include the relocation of the McKinney Avenue Trolley and curb extensions with parking.
Print shops provide whatever type of signs are required when traffic needs to be rerouted.
Changing back to a two-way system was discussed as early as 2015. The streets were converted to one-way in 1972 as a means of adding capacity during the expansion of US-75 and to provide another route to downtown. Changing it back to two-way is expected to slow traffic traveling through commercial and residential neighborhoods, thereby increasing safety.
The approximated cost of doing this is $21.1m and according to Katy Slade, who is on Uptown Dallas’s Two-Way Conversion Committee, the change from a one-way to a two-way system should be completed within 18 months.
