Amazon is setting the pace when it comes to speedy delivery service with Amazon NOW, which it is expanding into the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The Amazon Now service provides deliveries of urgently needed essentials in 30 minutes or less. It was first launched last June in India and is now available in urban areas of the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
This new ultra-fast service is made possible by mini warehouses that are approximately the size of a CVS drugstore and which stock around 3,500 products. Among the products stocked are diapers, pet food, beer, meat, playing cards, nonprescription medications and cellphone charging cables.
Print shops can supply custom packing materials that help individual companies build their brand.
Amazon Now has gone live in dozens of U.S. cities, including now most of the Dallas-Fort Worth area and the company is continuing to open small order-processing hubs across the country and in foreign cities.
A service fee applies for using Amazon Now with Prime members being charged $3.99 and non-Prime members having to pay $13.99. Additionally, orders under $15 will be charged a $1.99 small basket fee.
Unlike its huge fulfillment centers where millions of items are available for picking and packing by a mix of robots and human workers, only a handful of people will be manning each mini warehouse.
Artificial intelligence and other technology is used to choose each individual Amazon Now location’s product inventory.
