Zillow’s latest population analysis has revealed the Lone Star State to be the most popular destination for those born between 2004 and 1996, commonly identified as Generation Z.
The real estate marketplace used data gleaned from the 2022 U.S. Census Bureau information from which it was able to identify the Top 10 states for relocating Gen Zers. The results showed Texas taking the No. 1 spot with 76,805 of that age group moving here versus 43,913 moving to California, which garnered the No. 2 spot.

A number of variables play into the decision of where to move, one of which for those ages 18 to 24 is the desire to live in a state where high-performing job markets abound. This factor benefits Texas as a whole and Dallas in particular, as the city is where many top employers are found. Additionally, Dallas is one of the primary areas in the country boasting a remote workforce. Also contributing to the Lone Star State’s appeal is its weather, which is mostly sunny throughout the year, thereby providing younger workers with the opportunities for fun outdoor activities.
Joining Texas in the top five states for Gen Zers to relocate to are California in the No. 2 slot, Florida at No. 3, and North Carolina and Washington bringing up the rear at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. The least favored state destination among this age group was Michigan.
