Robotaxis a step closer to reality in Dallas

The San Francisco-based Cruise company has moved on to the final phase of testing before self-driving robotaxis become available to Dallas residents.

Cruise, a company dedicated to developing self-driving cars, was launched in 2013; three years later, the company was purchased by General Motors. Already Cruise has as total of almost 400 robotaxis in operation across Phoenix, Austin and San Francisco, with a total of close to 2 million miles driven without benefit of a human driver. The company has recently entered the Houston market as well.

A company’s Logo Design can have a long-lasting effect on its success, particularly when entering a new market.

According to a company spokesperson, when Cruise enters a new market, they begin by sending human drivers out to explore the city and learn about its unique driving environment. Next, the company conducts what it calls “supervised testing”. At this stage, the robotaxis are driving autonomously but with a human as a safety driver behind the wheel.

The final phase, which is where Dallas is at, is currently ongoing, with autonomous driving with the only human in the car situated in the back seat. Presently, there are less than 10 Cruise robotaxis driving around the city carrying only company employees and their friends and families.

How long this last phase of testing will last is unclear. However, the company says commercial public robotaxi service will commence for “Dallas and its surrounding communities soon.”
