Dallas boosters, with their eye on the eight remaining years of the Texas Rangers' lease in Arlington’s Globe Life Park, are considering ways to entice the team into moving to Dallas.
The push is on to find a suitable location upon which to build a retractable roof stadium in downtown Dallas. John Crawford, part of a business group, Downtown Dallas Inc., said that five or six locations have been found that are serious contenders for that type of development.
Among the possible locations being considered are the former Reunion Arena parking lot, which the city of Dallas owns; the site of the abandoned state jail near the Trinity River on Commerce Street; and in Deep Ellum on Canton Street and near Interstate 30, which is the location of the Dallas City Service Center.
Attempts to bring the Rangers to Dallas have been tried before and were obviously unsuccessful. Crawford said that unless the team expresses an interesting in the move, he would be disinclined to try again.
A statement released by Mayor Mike Rawlings disavows any plans for the city to construct a Major League Baseball stadium, so it will likely be up to private developers to get the ball moving.
Presentation Folders will need to be put together to pitch plans to investors, the city of Dallas and the Rangers. Arlington city leaders expressed their intention to fight to keep the Rangers.
