Johnson, 66, was Governor Greg Abbott’s choice to take over for DA Susan Hawk. Hawk made the decision to not finish her term of office, which expires in two years, due to mental health issues on which she felt she needed to focus her full attention.
Johnson, now Dallas County’s first female African-American DA, has plans to run for the office in the 2018 election and continue her tenure. Formerly, she has carried custom Business Cards identifying her as a Dallas County prosecutor, a felony court judge, and attorney in private practice.
According to DA Johnson, her priority in her new position will be to root out wrongful convictions and make them right, saying:
"We are serious about making certain that people who have been wrongfully convicted are freed as quickly as possible. I'm making that a very strong, a No. 1 priority, in my office."
She also has plans to open satellite locations for her office, so as to promote crime prevention.
A hard worker, Johnson was known during her stint as a judge for not recessing her courtroom for lunch until mid-afternoon and then continuing to hold court into the evening.
