The Public Utility Commission of Texas has recently released an announcement that it has approved a fourth area code for Dallas to ensure it can accommodate the area’s rising population.
The area codes currently in use – 972, 469, and 214 – will, according to the Public Utility Commission, likely run out in the first quarter of 2021. Starting then, the new area code, 945, will begin being assigned as new phone numbers are needed. It is estimated that the new area code will suffice until 2034.
Those who need to contact their business card printing services for a new batch of cards will be relieved to know that they will not be affected by the area code change. All already issued numbers will remain the same.
The first area code issued to Dallas was 214, and it was one of the first ones to be employed in 1947 when the North American Numbering Plan was instituted. It was not until 1996 that a second area code was required, 972, which was issued to homes and businesses in the suburbs with the original area code being reserved for the city proper.
The third code, 469, was issued in 1999, without any geographic limits. The only information having one of the 945 numbers will denote to strangers is that it is a new number. The addition of the 945 numbers should be painless; the fourth area code will apply going only to new customers.
