Emergency tax extension granted to Dallas residents

Some good news for those living in Dallas and the rest of Texas is that due to February’s fierce winter storm and the complications it put upon residents, the IRS has announced a 2020 tax filing extension.

Residents of the Lonestar State have had their tax deadlines moved to June 15. This means that the usual March 15 deadline for various business tax returns for 2020 will be extended three months. Plus, those individual and business returns for 2020 that would have been due on the usual April 15 Tax Day will receive an extra two months.

Other deadlines moved to June 15 include estimated tax payments for the fourth quarter and IRA contributions for 2020 that are normally due on April 15, excise tax and quarterly payroll tax returns usually due on April 30, and 2020 returns normally due May 17 for tax-exempt organizations functioning on a calendar-year basis.

Those residing in a federally declared disaster area, such as Dallas County, may, if they choose, claim disaster-related losses. Some organization, as a public service, employ Print shops to print details on claiming these.

Those who claim these losses on their 2020 return should add ‘Texas – Severe Winter Storms’ as a Disaster Designation at the top of the form in bold letters. According to the IRS, it is important to also include the disaster declaration number on any return, which is FEMA 4586.
