A poll conducted by The Dallas Morning News shows the grocery bag fee is still unpopular, but shoppers are adapting to the change by using reusable Bags.
A Dallas Morning News survey, conducted by phone during the April 10 to 17 period, polled 800 residents about their feelings regarding the new 5¢ disposable bag fee that was enacted in January. According to the survey, the fee is having the desired effect; rather than pay the extra 5¢ per bag, people are opting for eco-friendly alternatives.
The disposable bag fee, often incorrectly referred to as a ‘bag ban’, is providing local entrepreneurs with a promotional opportunity. By absorbing some or all of the costs of customized reusable bags to their patrons, they can gain goodwill as well as increased exposure.
Confirmed support for the fees was shown to be at only 41% while about half of those questioned stated their opposition to the fee. However, most people did agree that the extra charge, unpopular as it is, will reduce litter.
The public’s preferred methods of adjusting to the Dallas bag fee, according to the poll, are that 57% are choosing to utilize their own reusable bags, while 23% are using single use bags and paying the fee.
