Dallas private school security guard gets grand sendoff

A campaign by the class of 2005 to honor a retiring long-time security guard with a $2,005 gift was quickly picked up by of alumnae with amazing results.

Kifleab Tekle spent 30 years as a security guard at the elite Hockaday School in North Dallas. The alumnae of the all-girl’s private school where the Bush twins were students have raised over $178,000 as of April 11. A private ceremony on that date was held to present Tekle with the going away gift, but a check of the Go Fund Me page today (April 18), shows the fund received donations.

Tekle, or Kief as the students called him, was a favorite among students, staff, and parents and likened by former students to Hagrid at Hogwarts. Opinions suggest he was the kind of employee that institutions such as Hockaday are inclined to include in their Brochures to show the school in a warm, personal light.

The security guard was born to a much different life in his native Ethiopia. His wealthy family lost their eight-bedroom villa, millions of dollars, livestock, hotel, and seven estates when the Ethiopia monarchy was toppled in the early 1970s. With the help of a charity he was able to emigrate to the U.S. and settled in Dallas in 1986, where he has lived ever since.
