Hall became chief on September 5, 2017 and identifies as a reform-minded chief who has, in her three years in office, faced some historic challenges. In her letter of resignation, she wrote:
“These past three years have been saturated with a series of unimaginable events that individually and collectively have never happened in the city of Dallas.”
Originally, Chief Hall gave her last day would be no later than November 9; however, at the request of City Manager T.C. Broadnax, she agreed to remain until the end of 2020. In her letter of resignation Hall was not precise concerning her next career move, saying, “I must keep my next career step confidential.” It looks like business card printers somewhere will be the first besides her family to learn what Hall’s next job title will be.
The announcement of her resignation surprised Hall’s executive command staff as well as members of City Council. Reactions were mixed among Dallas police associations, with The Dallas Morning News reporting that some were happy to have a new person in the top position, while others, such as the Black Police Association of Greater Dallas, said losing Hall was a loss for the city.
The Dallas Police Department is the 10th-largest in the nation.
