Dallas entrepreneurs jump into alcohol-free market

Dawn Maire and Jamie Coulter, co-founders of Dallas-based Starla Wines, have thrown their hat in the AF (alcohol free) ring with three varieties of wines that have had their alcohol removed.

Starla Wines CEO Maire had previously served as president at Poo Pouri and Rockfish, her co-founder, Coulter, is a co-owner of the Highland Park Village La Vie Style House.

Their company’s selection of wines includes one of each: a Sauvignon Blanc, a Sparkling Rose and a Red Blend, can be purchased online for $28 a bottle or three bottles for $84. According to a press release from Starla, their wines are made in California from grapes grown in that state.

Print shops provide a wide array of services including assist with product label design as well as their printing.

To make their wine alcohol free, Maire and Coulter turned to BevZero, a group involved in de-alcoholizing technology. The process used starts with fermented wine that then undergoes vacuum distillation to vaporize the alcohol and remove while leaving the wine’s original aroma and flavors. The process leaves less than 0.5 percent alcohol in the wine.

Through the next five years, growth in the alcohol-free market is expected to be about 6 percent.

In addition to not producing a hangover, Starla Wines are low in sugar, carbs and calories. The company anticipates it will have all three wines available in the fall at some retail locations.
