Soon, the PayByPhone app that Dallas drivers have been using to pay for parking will no longer work on the city’s meters.
Smartphone users who wish to continue to avoid feeding parking meters by hand will want to download the new Parkmobile app this Wednesday, September 14, which is the day the old PayByPhone app will no longer work. The new app becomes effective as of today, September 12.
The new app, which works in the same way as the one it is replacing, has a proven track record in 35 of the largest U.S. cities. Moreover, it offers an option previously unavailable: notification of when time on their meter is almost up, as well as a chance to purchase more minutes without returning to the meter.
PayByPhone users should have started getting push notifications steering them to the new app starting right after Labor Day. Various other methods will likely be used to inform the public of the change. For instance, perhaps local businesses will use the app as a promotional vehicle, using Flyers to offer the public an incentive to acquire Parkmobile.
In 1935, Dallas was the second city in the country to install parking meters. Citywide, Dallas has about 4,000 parking meters, brings the city around $300,000 in revenue per month. PayByPhone became operational here in November 2013, and currently park-by-app transactions number about 40,000 every month.
