SmartAsset has issued a new annual report detailing the cost of childcare throughout America and Dallas was found to be more affordable than most of the country’s biggest metropolitan areas.
As it turns out it costs parents in DFW almost $22,000 to raise a child, which although that may sound staggering is actually a bargain compared to many other areas. Dallas-Fort Worth comes in at No. 16 among metropolitan areas with the lowest yearly childrearing costs. In our area the total cost came to $21,926, which was broken down as $10,396 for childcare and $3,002 for additional housing.

The national average for child rearing is $25,181 with the highest location in the nation being the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Massachusetts area at a cost of $37,758. Within the Lone Star State, the most expensive metro area is the Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown where the annual costs are $22,406 with $10,247 spent on childcare and $3,485 accounting for additional housing costs.
Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land and the San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan areas did slightly better than DFW with total annual childrearing costs of $21,396 and $21,014 respectively.
SmartAsset compared two working adult households with a single child to those that are childless. Additionally, the cost of medical expenses, food, and transportation among others were arrived at by using the MIT Living Wage Calculator.
