StorageCafe, an online platform to find storage, has put together a new migration report that spells out the amount of money Californians can on average save by relocating to Texas cities such as Dallas.
The report also details the number of people moving between the two states. As it turns out, in 2021 around 111,000 people left the Golden State to take up residence in Texas while a mere 33,000 Lone Star State individuals went to California to live during the same period.
Among the reasons for the tilt in Texas’ favor are the state’s lack of income tax, the increase in remote work flexibility, and the lower cost of living here. However, a significant portion consists of people coming to Dallas to take advantage of its booming housing market. The median home price in Dallas is $410,000 while the same size home in San Jose, California would cost nearly $1.5m.

While Santa Clara County, of which San Jose is the county seat, has seen more of its citizens abandoning the Golden State for Texas than any other county, residents from other parts of the state are benefiting as well. San Diego transplants can save approximately $459,768 on average when buying a home in Dallas.
Renters save as well with the price differences for rents in major California cities averaging $2,600, compared to the median rent of $1,562 per month here in Dallas for as much as 200 square feet more space.
