The money originates from the recently passed Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act. The I-20 Corridor Long-Distance Passenger Rail Project will also receive $500,000 as a result of that legislation. The act will also provide $2 billion to Amtrak’s Maine, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina partners and $108.5 million to the company for station and service upgrades.

The grants were awarded for the Intercity Passenger Rail Program by the Federal-State Partnership of the Federal Railroad Administration and included projects throughout the National Network plus the Corridor Identification and Development Program.
According to FRA Administrator Amit Bose the monies spent on these programs will help provide climate-friendly alternative to the current congestion of road and airports. Bose elaborated saying:
“Today’s investments in passenger rail nationwide, made possible by the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, are another step forward as we expand and modernize our country’s rail network, providing more Americans the world-class passenger rail they need and deserve."
How specifically the $500,000 awarded will be used has not been announced. The current estimated cost to construct the track connecting Dallas and Houston, according to TxDOT is about $16 billion.
