As a part of the buildup to the Texas State Fair, the winners of the State Fair Food Awards have been announced.
The winners of the 12th Big Tex Choice Awards are in, and among the eight finalists for best taste, Fried Jell-O came out on top. Probably the most unusual of the contenders, Fried Jell-O consists of panko dusted cherry-flavored Jell-O that has been flash fried.
In addition to the ‘Best Taste Award’, each year a ‘Most Creative’ title is awarded and Isaac Rousso succeeded in securing his second such award this year with his State Fair Cookie Fries. Rousso, a regular contender in the State Fair Food Awards, has made it to the finalist stage seven times.
In addition to a concession stand’s food, its success depends a lot on being able to grab the attention of fairgoers with the graphic design of Packaging and signage. The crinkle-cut ‘fries’ are packaged for sale similarly to fast food fries and utilize a cardboard sleeve. They come in classic cookie flavors with the customer’s choice of milk chocolate and strawberry dipping sauce.
The Big Tex Choice Awards doubles as a fundraiser for the State Fair of Texas Youth Scholarship Program, which in its 24-year history has provided over 1,800 students with over $87m in scholarships.
The 2016 Texas State Fair takes place September 30 to October 23 in Dallas.
