Starting at Union Station at 11:00 am, the annual parade continued down Main Street in Downtown, Dallas. The theme this year was ‘Honoring the Military Family’. Prior to the parade a military honors ceremony including taps took place, as well as a missing man flyover conducted by the U.S. Air Force.
A Veteran’s Day ceremony and parade has traditionally been an opportunity for the local business community to provide promotional Pens and other ad specialties that are of a patriotic nature, such as being colored red, white, and blue.
George P. Bush, Texas Land Commissioner, gave the keynote address that emphasized the role military families play and the sacrifices they endure for our country. Mark Santoyo, a Navy veteran, commented:
"It's an open check, a blank check we write and so do our families. And the support we receive from them at home is kind of unexplainable."
In attendance were veterans from all eras of service and military branches. A number of service members stated that the annual tradition of swearing in new military recruits before the crowd was their favorite part of the Veteran’s Day program. This year, more than 150 men and women stood in front of Dallas City Hall and gave their oath of enlistment.
