Venus Williams to play at inaugural Dallas event

Iconic tennis player Venus Williams will be one of the players taking part in the Women’s Tennis Classic Showcase being held by the Dallas Open at the SMU.

Williams will be matched against Danielle Collins, who holds a No. 14 ranking, in a singles exhibition match. The Williams-Collins match-up will be the best of three singles, with the third being a tie-break. In a news release, the Tournament Director of the Dallas Open, Peter Lebadevs, said:

“We are thrilled to announce that Venus Williams will join us in our inaugural showcase of women’s tennis at the 2023 ATP Dallas Open, playing in the Women’s Tennis Classic.”

Williams is a seven Grand Slam holder in singles, five of which she earned at Wimbledon and a couple from the U.S. Open. In addition to her singles titles, Venus holds two major titles in mixed doubles and 14 major women’s doubles titles.

While Williams, at age 42, is no longer one of the world’s top-ranked players, she still has the ability to pack stadiums wherever she plays.

Venus’s sister, Serena Williams, retired from tennis after the 2022 U.S. Open following the sisters’ doubles loss. Venus said after the loss that she herself is likely retire from doubles.

The Dallas Open will take place February 4 to 12, 2023, with the Women’s Tennis Classic Showcase held on February 4, at 7 pm.
