Five locations throughout the Dallas area now have prototype bus shelters by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART).
According to a DART release, five bus stop locations across four cities have had the new shelters installed and the agency is now looking for feedback during the next four months before a final design is chosen. The new shelter designs were created using feedback that DART gleaned from its riders in 2023. They learned that riders were mostly interested improved lighting for visibility and safety, protection from the weather, and real-time bus arrival information.
Suggestion or feedback cards are among the many items local Print shops can supply.
Using this information as a starting point, DART then enlisted the University of Texas at Arlington’s architecture and urban planning students to assist in creating the new designs. The three prototype designs the students came up with were: a standard-width shelter, a slim-width containing benches and a mini shelter with seating for two.
For their work on the new shelters the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2023 awarded UTA students the Texas Student Honor Award.
Two of the five prototype shelters have been installed here in Dallas: A mini shelter at Hall Street and Ross Avenue, and a standard shelter at Clarence Street and Malcolm X Boulevard. Through November DART will be gathering feedback and by the end of 2024 a final design will have been chosen for the Next Generation Bus Shelters.
