Imperfect Produce, a California startup, fights waste while offering inexpensive “ugly” produce, and has now established a presence in Dallas.
A press release issued by the company explains that Imperfect sources produce rejected by grocery stores due to visual imperfections, as well as surplus produce from farms. The fruits and vegetables are delivered to the consumer’s door and, compared to grocery store prices, are an average of 30% less.
Residents of certain zip codes in the city can select the size box; whether it contains just fruits, just vegetables or a mix of both; and organic or regular produce. Box sizes range from small to extra-large, with prices starting at $12.
New exclusively delivery-oriented companies do well when they use flyer printing to inform those within their delivery area of their service.
A typically a box of fruit might contain mostly citrus, such as grapefruit, oranges, limes, and lemon, along with a few apples or bananas. A medium-size vegetable box could have asparagus, eggplant, cabbage, green bell peppers, kale, tomatoes, and zucchini. Contents vary by time of year.
Imperfect Produce was founded in 2015 and expanded into Texas in 2018 with locations in Austin and San Antonio, and most recently Houston in late January. The company also serves locations in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington.
The company partners with local food pantries, so Imperfect in Dallas will be donating its surplus to the North Texas Food Bank.
