City Council does not unanimously back the move to include scooter rental in Dallas. Dwaine Caraway, the mayor pro tem, revealed his apprehensions to WFAA’s Inside Politics. He was quoted as saying.
"Making sure that we have the bicycles that are everywhere at least docked and not dockless. Now, at the end of the day, instead of cleaning up the mess, we chose to move forward and add on top of that some scooters.”
So far, city council's decisions on the matter include providing a six-month trial period for the scooters, followed by a review of complaints, injuries and how well the rules are being adhered too. Among the rules so far are that scooters will not be permitted on sidewalks in the downtown area. According to Caraway, more regulations should be forthcoming.
Caraway believes that bikes will continue to not be picked up unless enforcement is upgraded. It might be wise for proponents of bike and scooter rental to contract with a brochure printing service to ensure the public is aware of how the system works and what regulations apply.
For those who prefer to rent a scooter rather than a bike, the rental price is $1, plus 15¢ a minute paid via smartphone.
