Preservationists applaud Statler Hotel renovation success

One of the largest redevelopment projects in Dallas, as well as the biggest historic tax credit venture in Texas, has recently received praise from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for the successful rescue of the Statler Hilton Hotel.

The 61-year-old Statler Hotel, located on Commerce Street in Dallas, is a $175m mixed-use project that is well underway. The 19-story mid-century Statler on the threshold of being lost forever has been saved after spending time on the U.S. endangered landmarks’ list created by the National Trust.

The Statler opened in 1956 as one of the biggest and most elaborate hotels in the United States. However, the years it lay vacant took their toll and it looked like the site would be demolished in favor of new construction. The purchase in 2014 by the Centurion American Development saved the hotel from the wrecking ball.

A recent statement written by Stephanie Meeks, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s president, pointed out that the renovation of the Statler will show the power welded by the historic tax credit. It will also serve as an example of how preserving old or historic building can help maintain the character of a neighborhood and revitalize communities.

The repurposed Statler Hotel will contain a mixture of apartments and hotel rooms. The personalized Stationery for hotel guest will bear the letterhead Hilton Curio Hotel, and will commence operations later in 2017.
