Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has, according to a news release, purchased a large number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses from the California-based Gillig, with an eye on next year’s FIFA World Cup.
The cost for the 476 buses is estimated to be about $373.5m, of which $103m will be come from federal grant funds. The CNG buses supplied by Gillig’s offers the benefit of low emissions without a lessening in available power. Gillig says its buses are the most reliable and have the best fuel economy of any on the market, while creating near-zero admissions and less noise than gasoline-powered engines.

Part of the appeal of the new buses is that they are “Buy America” compliant with every step of the process from design to final assembly occurring in the U.S. Additionally, they will help DART meet its goal of creating a more modern transit system by replacing the oldest vehicles in their aging fleet with light-rail vehicles and new buses.
The planned for new additions to the DART fleet coincide with Dallas, or more specifically Arlington, being one of 16 North American and Mexican cities that will be hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026. In June and July 2026, nine matches in the tournament will take place at AT&T Stadium. The new buses will begin carrying passengers by spring of 2026.
