Dallas artists vying to design two public projects for library

Proposals are now being sought by the Dallas Public Library for two projects to enrich its main library in the city’s downtown.

Library officials are seeking designs for garbage cans and a walkway that will create a playfully unexpected vibe and incentivize learning. The objective of the projects is to create a fun welcoming environment for kids arriving for a field trip, attending a library program, or making the trip to the vital statistics office with their parents.

The library will award $2,000, paid upon installation, for a kid-friendly path stretching from the sidewalk to the Central Library’s main entrance. A Print shop will print the selected design and install it on an exterior concrete vinyl calendar via non-skid laminate.

The second project will pay $1,000 for five kid-friendly garbage receptacles that will be placed at the main entrance of the Central Library. The winning design will be transferred to a vinyl wrap that will cover the 35-gallon trash cans.

This will be the second time designs have been elicited for the municipality’s trash containers. In 2016, a program called Art for Dumpsters was initiated by the Dallas Department of Sanitation Services to decorate its recycling containers.

The winning designs will be chosen by the Office of Cultural Affairs and the Dallas Public Library. For more information, call the city's Central Library.
