Christies to auction $250m art collection

The late Dallas-Fort Worth philanthropist Anne Hendricks Bass’ art collection from her Fifth Avenue, New York City apartment will be sold by Christie’s at auction in May.

The “The Collection of Anne H. Bass,” valued at approximately $250, is thus described by the renowned auction house:

“These 12 works form a singularly compelling narrative that speaks to both the power of connoisseurship, and the enduring relevance and radicality that characterize the greatest works of art.”

Auctions houses have historically turned to printing services to provide them with catalogs for sale items.

Anne Bass died a year ago this month, aged 78. Her ex-husband, Sid Bass, is an oil heir and Fort Worth investor with a $3.4bn net worth. Anne, a Dallas-Fort Worth area resident, was a devoted supporter of the arts and local non-profits.

The Bass collection up for auction includes four Monet paintings with a combined value of $105m to $165m, a bronze sculpture valued between $20m and $30m by Edgar Degas, and two paintings valued at $105m to $145m by Mark Rothko.

The Collection of Anne H. Bass will sell during the auction house’s annual sale of 20th and 21st Century art in New York. The collection is currently in London for an April 5-8 exhibit, and this will be followed by an exhibit in Hong Kong during April 20-21.
