The Sumo Championship League has set its inaugural event for Cedar Park this October, aiming to bring the Japanese tradition to an American audience.
The combat sport of sumo features super-sized athletes from around the world as they look to force each other to the ground or outside the circle of competition. Each competition will feature 12 wrestlers in multiple rounds of competition. There will be a twelve-man round-robin competition, with the top six moving on to a second round. The top four from that stage will square off in a seeded best-of-three bracket for a $10, 000 prize.
The Sumo Championship League is looking to draw on the existing American amateur sumo circuit as well as heavyweight collegiate wrestlers, football linemen, and anyone who thinks they have the strength and toughness to compete. Wrestlers will earn points at monthly events that go towards the season-ending championship.
The Cedar Park event will look to start off the competition with a professional live-event experience inspired by modern American sports, drawing in spectators from the surrounding Austin region. Fledgling sports leagues like this often use poster printing and local media advertising to reach a grassroots audience. Future tournaments are scheduled for Chicago and Ontario, California.
The Sumo Championship League event will take place at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park on the evening of Saturday, October 10.
