A long awaited planetarium and science and technology museum is opening in Cedar Park, thanks to the efforts of a nonprofit.

A former soccer complex has been transformed into museum of science and technology. Although named Austin Planetarium, the Cedar Park facility will not actually include a planetarium for a few months.

While the museum has been planned for decades, the planetarium is due, in part, to Cedar Park having the only building tall enough to accommodate it, according to the planetarium’s executive director, Torvald Hessel.

The nonprofit responsible for the museum and planetarium is leasing the Cedar Park building for five years while looking for a permanent location on which to build. The group has been teaching children, via a mobile exhibit, about science and space.

Residents got a preview of what the new facility will deliver when the mobile museum visited in February, allowing kids aged four and five to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Located off FM 1431 near Sam Bass Road and Parmer Lane, the price of admission to the science and technology museum will be $21 for adults; children’s tickets will cost less.

For its grand opening on March 20, the special treat of a traveling international science exhibit will be on hand. Both grand openings and special exhibits benefit from the services of a banner printer.
