At the end of January, Cedar Park activated Smart911, a system that has the potential to improve the city’s response to emergencies.
Smart911 enables Cedar Park residents to provide useful information in the form of a profile that will immediately be available to responders in the event of an emergency. The scope of information that will be available is totally up to the individual or family. Examples of information they might wish to have included are allergies, disabilities of household members (physical or mental), and emergency contacts.
Additionally, since around 80% of 911 calls in Cedar Park are made from a cellphone, the new system would enable an address to be attached to that number. Presently, if the caller is unable to communicate the address, dispatch is only able to narrow the location down to a geographic area. With the new system, a resident’s address could be instantly available to the dispatcher even if the caller is unable to speak.
Cedar Park residents can sign up and fill out their profiles free of charge. With the help of brochure printers, Cedar Park officials can ensure that residents understand the benefits offered by Smart911 as well as how to access them. However, the city will have to pay $18,500 for the first year it uses Smart911 and $13,500 each year thereafter.
