The Austin Civic Orchestra will be holding a special classical concert in Cedar Park this November, highlighting the work of woman composers.
Featured works will be the Wrecker’s Overture by Dame Ethel Smith and Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1 in E minor. Jose Florist will serve as the soloist for the concert, performing violin for Reena Esmail’s work Concerto for You, accompanied by a string orchestra. The show will be conducted by ACO Music Director Veronica Salinas, who recently became the new director following a two-year search after the retirement of Lois Ferrari. The concert is part of the Orchestra’s efforts to highlight under-represented composers in its selection.
The show, dubbed “The Artistry of the Woman Composer”, is the second show in the Orchestra’s 2024-25 season. The season kicked off with “Pajama Party: Playing with Murder” this September, and the season will go on to include holiday concerts, a collaboration with the Austin Soundwaves Student Ensemble, and a tribute to visual art. Classical orchestras and ensembles like this often draw on local talent and promote their shows through methods such as poster printing and social media. Discount tickets will be available for seniors, military veterans, educators, and college students, with free admission for youth.
“The Artistry of the Woman Composer” will take place on the evening of November 2 at Cedar Park High School.
