The city of Cedar Park came up with an incentive package of $1.2m to entice Firefly Space Systems into establishing its new headquarters here, according to an announcement made by the company on September 26.
The California based Firefly Space Systems is working with the University of Texas’ Advanced Computing Center to design a new launch system. The company anticipates putting small probes into space, using the new launch system, for as little as $8m.
Firefly announced the purchase of approximately 200 acres in Burnet County near Briggs for a rocket testing facility. In the same announcement, the company said it wanted to build a new headquarters in a northern Austin suburb. Eventually, Firefly said the new headquarters would provide more than 200 jobs.
According to the company, negotiations to construct a 20,000 square-foot office complex in Cedar Park are nearing completion. Firefly expects to spend $7.5m on construction and, by 2019, the site will have an annual payroll of around $12m. This puts the average job at about $60,000, which is the median wage for the county.
New employers put money into the local economy in a number of ways; for instance, a new company needs Stationery printers to provide letterhead, customized invoices, and other Print products. Additionally, many employees will want to have digital Business Cards produced.
