In commemoration of the 73rd Anniversary of Pearl Harbor, Cedar Park took the opportunity to honor its World War II veterans at Veterans Memorial Park.
Exactly 73 years to the day, on Sunday, December 7, the City of Cedar Park took the time to honor the 65 WW II veterans who live here. Through speeches, flags, a military flyover, and a brass band, the vets, most in their nineties, sat filled with pride at being remembered and acknowledged by their friends and neighbors.
Whole families turned out for the event and watched as veterans, many in wheelchairs, received Keys to the City from Mayor Matthew Powell. The mayor made note of the fact that it was only fitting that these men are the first ever to receive this honor.
Parents explained the meaning of the occasion to their children, including the attack on Pearl Harbor and the war that was waged on the home front. In attendance was one of the women who waited for a husband or boyfriend to return from war; Gloria Meece and Bob Meece were Junior High sweethearts and have been married for 65 years.
