Austin shows love for tennis

World-class female tennis players return to Austin next month for a top-rated professional tournament.

The ATX Open is the first American event of the year for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and it will be broadcast to fans around the world. It will be the third time the WTA 250 tournament has made a stop in Austin.

The event will start with a weekend two-round competition to determine qualified players. The tournament will continue over the following week with the main draw, including both singles and doubles contests.

Fifth-ranked Jessica Pegula of the US is among the top players scheduled to play in Austin. Pegula is the defending singles champion on the hard surface at Austin and had singles victories on both clay in Charleston and grass in Bad Homburg, Germany last year.

Austin’s Westwood Country Club will be converted for the tournament to include a center court with seating for 1700 people. Ticket holders can watch most matches at the ATX Open on center court, grandstand court and one or two others. Including others used for practice, there will be a total of 11 courts where the public can watch the action.

Local venues that host major sports competitions such as this often use banner printing to draw attention to the event.

The WTA 250 tournament will be held February 21 to March 1 at Austin’s Westwood Country Club.
