Culture of Mexico comes to Austin

VIVA Mexico, a celebration of dance, music and visual art, will be presented next month in Austin.

Organized by the Mexican-American Cultural Center, the 18th annual event will include live mariachi music, folk dancers, and other entertainers, as well as an artisan market. Children can participate in hands-on free art activities organized by staff of the cultural center.

The festival displays and performances will showcase Mexican history and traditions while paying tribute to the country’s Independence Day.

The area’s Latino population and guests will gather for the free, spirited celebration where dignitaries will give the Grito de Independencia. In English, it translates to the cry of independence which, in 1810, was a call to arms leading to the Mexican War of Independence.

Vendors will be selling original artwork, jewelry, crafts and other gifts. Entrepreneurs who sell items at events such as this often use poster printing to draw attention to their products.

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican-American Cultural Center was a long-time community dream which finally opened in 2007 after more than three decades of planning. Traditionally, it is the venue for VIVA Mexico, but the facility is currently undergoing renovations and another location must be found.

VIVA Mexico will be held on the evening of Saturday, September 13, 2025 at an as-yet undetermined Austin location. This year’s venue will soon be announced on the Cultural Center website.
