The Speakeasy presents 2023 Carnaval Brasileiro next month.
The Carnaval do Brasil (Carnival of Brazil) can be traced to the pre-Lenten celebrations staged throughout the Middle Ages in Europe. African rhythms, particularly the samba, add to the annual celebration. Carnaval is a major national celebration that lasts for many days, or in reality, several weeks, and is observed by people from all social classes in Brazil.
The origins of this Austin festival lie with Brazilian scholarship students at the University of Texas, hosted their own celebration with the help of their local friends in 1978. About 200 people attended the event, which was held in a tiny space at Austin's Unitarian Church.
From that beginning, Carnaval Brasileiro gradually developed into one of Austin's trademark events celebrating Brazilian culture. It features live music, costumes, and dancing. There will be cash bars and food trucks at the event.
General admission this year is $35. Those interested in attending can reserve a table for four for $200. Face and body painting will also be available for a small fee. Poster printing is a great way for organizers to get the word out about events such as this one.
The Brazilian-style Mardi Gras celebration will be held on February 4, starting at 8:00 pm. The Speakeasy is at 412 Congress Avenue #D in Austin, Texas, 78701. Visit the event listing for more information on Carnaval Brasileiro or to purchase tickets.
