University to gain extra facility for students

Anderson University recently broke ground on a new student center that will have a 400-seat theater, bookstore, fitness and dance centers, space for student organizations, and a 600-seat dining room.

The student center will be 86,000 square feet in size and cost $15.2m. According to vice president for institutional advancement R. Dean Woods, fundraising efforts by the University have so far amounted to $12.5m, with another $1m expected to be raised by the end of the summer, and the remaining amount by the end of 2015 or May 2016 at the latest.

Local Print companies may be getting involved in this fundraising effort by creating Flyers and mailers that can be sent to alumni and other supporters, seeking donations to the project.

Its location will be on the main campus and named for United States District Judge G. Ross Anderson, who has supported the school for many years and whose name is also on the federal courthouses in the city. It is scheduled to be completed by the fall semester of 2016.

Evans Whitaker, president of the University, commented that it has been a long wait for this project, as the University has had many challenges over its 104-year history. Woods’ predecessor, dean of students Dick Franklin, had created some sketches in the late 1980s and many of his ideas for a space for students will be realized.
